Note From the Editor: Creative Limits

As this issue goes to press, we just wrapped the judging for Balayage & Boho, MODERN’s festival-inspired styling contest where our readers created their best boho styles—think top knots, braids, space buns and effortless-waves on sun-kissed strands.

The entries were amazing—thousands of stylists uploaded their work, and each day it grew increasingly difficult to pick our favorites (see the entries on page 50).

What we loved seeing was how classic techniques resurfaced with trendy modifications: three-strands get bloused-out for body-building ponies with weight; braiding gets a nod from tapestrying with woven details to create an infinity effect; and fishtails are accented with jeweled embellishments and pops of color.

This throwback theme continues throughout these pages of MODERN.

On page 94, see how the co-creative directors of The Salon by InStyle inside JCPenney take the strength and provocation of the 1940s female and translate it to contemporary finishes.

In Ink Illusion (on page 100), Aveda artists collaborate on a collection inspired by the structured clothing and Versace patterns of the 1980s.

And on page 106, see how Hairdreams educator Erin Hayden pays homage to the ’60s with bold styles and bright colors on beehive-inspired top knots with color-blocking.

Turn to page 80 to see the winning looks from the North American Hair-styling Awards (NAHA) in a special Winner’s Portfolio. Each year, NAHA unites the industry under one roof to celebrate the talent and artistry of many of the continent’s top artists. While interviewing the finalists on the red-carpet, one theme rang true: The skills learned from preparing for competition make stylists more polished professionals—increasing speed, flexing creative muscle, teaching how to conceptualize styles and then execute them.
