Note From the Editor: Transition Time

AH, OCTOBER... For some, the transition to colder weather brings thoughts of pending windshield scraping, salt-stained hems and chapped lips. Yet, I’ve always loved the change of seasons—October means apple picking, trick-or-treating, and cozying up by the fireplace.

I’m ready to embrace fall’s beauty and style trends, (hello, boot season!) and excited to see the shift in autumn’s makeup palettes, nail polish tones and hair color formulations. (See Blend, Feather, Smudge, Shadow beginning on page 64 for 40+ formulas from leading color manufacturers and educators.)
With this issue of MODERN, you also received PROCESS 2017, the ultimate guide to all-things hair color, packed with the top tips and advice on marketing color services from successful salon owners, trending finishes from creative colorists, plus strategies to build and maintain a strong color business.

In this special edition, you’ll also get the first look at results from MODERN’s 2017 PROCESS research, which focuses on the integrity of the hair—see how the health of the hair is a leading client driver, and get the latest strategies and innovations to prep and protect strands before, during and after color services.
And, as we get closer to approaching the holiday season (yes, really), we’re also reflecting on those who are in need.

As this issue goes to press, much of the globe is deep in recovery mode—and likely will be for months, maybe years, to come. The recent natural disasters left many people and fellow industry professionals out of work, and caused devastation to families, homes and businesses.

The images emerging from those affected are hard to look at. Yet as relief efforts ramp up, I couldn’t be more proud of how the industry has rallied together to support one another to rebuild.

The salon industry shifted into high gear, offering funding and goods to help affected salons and salon professionals get back on their feet.

I have seen countless videos, relief funds and encouraging words from stylists, manufacturers, social media personalities and salon owners all sharing how they are joining together to help. To learn more about how you can get involved, or if you’re in need of assistance, visit modernsalon.com and search “hurricane.”
