Note From the Editor: Beauty's Legacy

In a recent conversation with Ammon Carver, the newly appointed chief artistic director of Ulta Beauty, he spoke of his Utah upbringing, a time mixed with uncertainties of his future and self-doubt. As a teen, he didn’t know where he fit in and had insecurities about accepting himself—until he started cosmetology school.

“That first day of hair school was one of those pivotal life-changing moments for me,” Carver says. “The hairdressers were so accepting, and everyone was so different from each other, yet were unified in this place of celebrating individuality, and being unique and awesome. I fell in love with the spirit of hairdressers and their ability to change lives. They helped me in that day to learn to love myself. I didn’t know if I’d ever be able to blow dry or cut hair, but I knew I wanted to be around these people.”

When he told me this story, I immediately identified with it. So many friends I met in beauty school came alive and blossomed into their true artistic selves. Even more powerful is watching clients’ lives change after leaving the salon chair—that’s the influence of this industry.

Join me this April at The Art Institute of Chicago for a celebration of this beautiful industry we proudly get to be a part of, as the Beauty Changes Lives Foundation returns to Chicago to present the 6th annual Beauty Changes Lives Experience, the signature philanthropic event at America’s Beauty Show.

All proceeds will benefit the Beauty Changes Lives Foundation, which has raised more than $5 million in scholarships for aspiring beauty and wellness professionals.

The event will include an intimate Legacy Award dinner posthumously honoring Horst Rechelbacher, founder of Aveda and Intelligent Nutrients, followed by a Runway Fashion Show that showcases sponsored NextGen teams and their mentors.

“Honoring Horst is a privilege for the Foundation and, in doing so, we also honor the thousands of industry members who were touched by Horst, by his life’s work and his talent for encouraging success in others,” says Lynelle Lynch, president of the Beauty Changes Lives Foundation. “This fundraising experience allows us all to pay it forward by supporting the next generations in beauty.”
