A Note From The Editor:

Twice each year, fashion and beauty pros descend on New York to showcase their talents on the runways of Fashion Week, shown over a week-long period in February for fall/winter, and in September for spring/summer. The event is soon followed by London Fashion Week, Paris Fashion Week and, finally, Milan Fashion Week.

“Although most hairdressers question the importance of the ever-present ponytail at NYFW or the predictable messy bun, there are frequently legitimate trends that emerge from these shows,” says our Beauty and Fashion Director Maggie Mulhern. “These trends can be as simple as gentle texture, shine or defined partings, or sometimes more extreme, such as dual textures and wet, slicked-back looks.”

Not too long ago, we interviewed some of Fashion Weeks leading names for insights into why Fashion Week is important to the salon community. And because this issue hits mailboxes right as Fashion Week is kicking off, we thought it a good time to revisit some of those thoughts:

Rodney Cutler, salon owner, celebrity stylist: “Tomorrow’s looks are born on the runway today, and it’s the stylist’s job to be the trend forecaster for their guests and clients. Our clients are reading fashion magazines and are inspired by what is seen on the runway, so a good stylist can reinterpret runway looks for wearable salon hair. This enhances our authority in the industry.”

Coby Alcantar, Oribe educator: “Everyone looks to fashion as a starting point to trends. It’s an exciting time to see how things can start on the runway and get translated to clients in the salon, from the little things like texture or a parting.”

Diana Macaluso, Fashion Week support: “Clients always ask what’s new or what’s trending. Being in the know—whether backstage or keeping up with the latest shows via social media—will keep your clients interested and in your chair.”

Jon Reyman, leads dozens of shows each season: “Hair is one way the beauty and fashion industries speak to each other. Because we are partnered on so many levels, it’s paramount that beauty professionals know what is happening in the fashion world. Fashion Week is one loud announcer of current trends. If no one cared about fashion, salons might be stagnant.”

Antoinette Beenders, Aveda educator and Fashion Week lead: “It puts stylists into situations they might not have experienced before, which is a huge growth opportunity for many. You have to see it. You have to experience it.”
