EDITOR'S NOTE:

I wrote these exact words last December and, unfortunately, the same theme rings true: Each December, this year-end column gets more challenging to write. The world is a complicated, messy place. And today’s tough complexities influence our actions, mood and interactions on a daily basis.

The painful headlines come at a time when we’re preparing to celebrate the season and spread joy. In the salon, at the busiest time of the year—and always—try to focus on what you do best: helping people leave your chair feeling better than when they walked in, and going the extra mile for guests—and your coworkers—to make them feel good, even and especially at a time when it can be challenging to feel good.

You should be proud of your community—this industry is so generous, giving and collaborative. And be proud of your profession—not every career allows you to spread happiness and joy to people every day.
Our Beauty and Fashion Director Maggie Mulhern recently helped spearhead the creation of a salon space inside a women’s shelter in Wanaque, New Jersey. She reached out to local beauty brands and they didn’t hesitate to join forces to make it happen. The resulting space, featured on page 36, brings joy to the residents and uplifts them to rebuild their lives.

On page 30, see how stylist Todd Kane created a program designed to fund cancer research and fuel creative energy through Love Out Lavender, an annual fundraising campaign that benefits City of Hope cancer research.
Whether it’s a gift of a smile, a helping hand, donating your time, money or your blood, there are plenty of ways to give back. As always, thank you for all you do to make this industry such a beautiful place!
