Editor's Note
Now that October is in full swing, clients are ready to welcome fall’s beauty and style trends, embracing the shift in autumn’s makeup palettes, nail polish tones and hair color formulations.
In this issue, color takes the main stage. Hair color not only draws your eye to the page, but it’s the salon service that drives professional creativity and brings in the most money: In MODERN SALON’s recent Process color research, more than 80% of salon business owners reported that more than half of their revenue comes from hair color services.
A recent article I wrote for modernsalon.com that continues to generate a lot of views is specific to how one colorist helps his clients stop coloring their gray hair. One might initially suspect that would lead to a loss in revenue, but it hasn’t. In fact, California colorist Jack Martin has carved out a nice space for himself that has clients flying in from across the country for his specialty services—and they’re returning for maintenance and purchasing retail products (purple color-depositing shampoo, conditioning masks, heat protectant, dry shampoo and Olaplex #3).
As clients start to think about their new look, make sure you’re thinking about all the ways you can help prep and maintain your clients’ hair for the best results, and bring in extra revenue to boot. Perhaps you should advise your client to address her sun-soaked, balayaged strands with a deep-conditioning treatment; maybe that gray-coverage appointment could turn into a smoothing service; and don’t forget about sending home that new redhead with a bottle of color-depositing conditioner. .
For favorite formulas, exciting transformations, advice on marketing color services, and before-and-afters that talk through the consultation to the creation, make sure you’re checking in to modernsalon.com’s color channel, and following us on Instagram @modernsalon. The inspiration is endless!
