A Way Forward
As of this writing (May 3, 2020), the states in the US that had stay-at-home orders in place have announced their plans for gradually lifting them. Personal care businesses are being slotted into the second or third phase of reopening and by the time this issue goes to print, many states may have entered that point. And while we can’t know what that will look like, we can make some pretty good guesses.
We know that as stylists incorporate suggested protocols into their services, they will be finding a new way of working. The creativity that you already bring to your work as an artist will also come to play in how you create a warm and welcoming environment.
“It’s really our biggest gift, the ability to touch souls and to be able to connect to strangers,” says Colin Caruso, artistic director of color for John Paul Mitchell Systems, in our piece on the client experience (“Business as Unusual” on page 12). “We need to prepare ourselves to respond to that human element as well as the act of doing hair.”
We also know that staying engaged and inspired will be important and the North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA) have adapted to our new reality by loosening restrictions that will encourage submissions (page 9). This year, NAHA entry collections may be published prior to submitting them, which is a big change. Entries open on June 11, 2020 and close on October 2.
The cover image for our June/July issue is by the talented team at Aveda, led by Antoinette Beenders, and is from their collection, The Revolution of Reinvention.
“Reinvention” will be the byword of the day as we transition through this time. The collection is an example of finding opportunity in chaos. The message behind the creation of these images is one of valuing those items that already exist and using them as building blocks to create something brand new.
This perfectly describes how stylists will be drawing on the emotional intelligence, hair skills and life experience you already possess to move forward. We can’t know what things will look like until we get there—the path will be made by walking it. And we at MODERN SALON will be there with you, every step of the way.
