Summer Time Opportunities

Summer Time Opportunities

Summer for most salons can mean our numbers can be a bit off. But it’s not because our businesses are going in the wrong direction, it's just simply the fact that between our guests and our team it seems like someone is always taking ...

Styling Dads - From Haircare to Skincare

Styling Dads - From Haircare to Skincare

It’s amazing to me the evolution of what people picture when you ask someone, “what does a Dad look like?”Years ago that was a much easier answer. When you look back through history, men especially, had major periods of trends, ...

Hairspray to the Rescue

With the recent state of affairs, it seems like the economy is in a “super flat” state, and hairspray just might be the answer to growth. With professional blowouts making a comeback as a salon staple (or weekly indulgence), hairspray for many is about as understood as a vinyl record.

A Party With Purpose

Last Friday, our studio held it’s latest Associates Soiree, planned by our team’s Artistic Director Tammy Reynolds and inspired by TLC’s Project Runway. Thirty-one friends, family and team members gathered to celebrate our associates while they demonstrated their talents in two timed skill challenges, creating bridal and avant garde looks.

Be Happy!

My friend Winn Claybaugh wrote a book where he tells us to be nice, and I 100 percent agree. What I would love to share with so many of our industry members is also be happy.

Color America Fort Worth: Sue Pemberton

As I shared in my last blog, Color America has been an amazing program and it’s been an honor to be involved with Cosmetologists Chicago and the America’s Beauty Show Team.

For Want of a Nail

There is an old tale of how, through the course of events, the lack of one nail, a shoe could not be put on the horse and then a solider could not fight on the horse, and ultimately the battle is lost because of the loss of this one soldier. I recently had a series of unfortunate events that had the opposite effect.

Giving Back

I had so much fun in December visiting beauty schools that Nathan Rosekranz had spoken and done demos at during the Matrix Mannequin Mania Competition. Nathan, the Fashion Director of our studios, created Ava for the Matrix Mannequin Mania and first was selected by the team at Matrix as a monthly semi-finalist, then Ava was chosen as a finalist by the editors of our professional industry publications.

Making a Difference

So many times, it seems like lives are getting harder, and at the same time, we work to make lives better by making our clients look and feel great. But what else can we do to make life better? Our team always looks to see what we can do to improve everyday life that does not require changing the successes our team has built. So, we started looking around and realized we were not fully maximizing our recycling opportunities.

Learning From Friends

I love learning from friends, because most of the time they are more honest about their experiences (what worked and didn’t work), and more open to sharing embarrassing things that happened while they were learning. That is why our studio is offering an open and ongoing shadowing program where outside stylists and colorists come and hang out with our team members.

Salons and Barber Shops: The Original Social Network

Those of you who know me know I am a huge Facebooker. I went from the kid who had no one sign his high school yearbook because he had no friends (I was like Ducky from Pretty in Pink) to having over 2,700 friends on Facebook. I love Facebook and became a devotee early on because it fits so well into what we as hairdressers do every day.

Spreading the Love

Spreading the Love

Last year, Matrix created a unique opportunity for six recent beauty school graduates with the Spread the Love campaign. Two hundred beauty school students and recent graduates applied. The final six would travel in pairs throughout the United States meeting salon professionals and finding out what we as hairdressers do. Read McIvor's blog and his stance on Matrix's "Spreading the Love."

You Are the Company You Keep

You Are the Company You Keep

When Cosmetologists Chicago invited my to become involved with Color America it was important to me to always have the most amazing friends who prove themselves everyday by making our industry and stylists behind the chair better. With artists like Kris Sorbie, Chrystofer Benson, Sue Pemberton, James Edick, John Simpson, Kimberly Kimble, Kelly Cardenas and Jo Blackwell-Preston, so far, Color America in the Company of Patrick McIvor has done just that, and this next time is no exception.

Pushing Yourself

The funny thing about growth is the fact that when we grow, we no longer fit into what we grew from. It is a natural occurrence, but many times we don’t notice, or grow as adults, because growth becomes more incremental in our daily lives and less ground breaking.

Color America: Jo Blackwell

As I shared in my last blog, Color America has been an amazing opportunity to be involved with Cosmetologists Chicago and the America’s Beauty Show Team. The event in Fort Worth gave me the opportunity to work with another amazing colorist—Jo Blackwell-Preston.
