When a mother grew out her hair specifically to give it to her daughter, hair extension specialist Alexia Belkina helped turn that gift into something her daughter could wear.

Belkina, who is based in Newton, Massachusetts, cut and prepared the mother’s hair, then used it to create custom extensions for the daughter, whose natural hair was very fine and lacked density.

The transformation was especially meaningful for Belkina, who specializes in Cold Invisible Hair Extensions, a technique that creates small, discreet bonds without heat during installation. Much of her work involves clients with very short or fine hair, where precise placement and blending are essential to achieving a seamless result.

Below, Belkina explains her method, the considerations behind the daughter’s application and what makes someone a good candidate for cold bond extensions.

Q: Please describe the “cold bead” method for someone new to the term.

Alexia Belkina: My technique is actually a cold bond method rather than a traditional bead method. I call it Cold Invisible Hair Extensions.

Unlike traditional keratin extensions, I don’t use heat or pre-made bonds during the installation. Each bond is individually hand-formed directly on the client’s hair using a special gel. This allows me to customize the size and placement of every bond depending on the density and condition of the client’s natural hair.

The bonds are very small, soft and designed to be nearly invisible, which gives me a lot of flexibility with placement, especially around areas where the hair may be finer or less dense. The goal is always to create length and fullness while keeping the installation lightweight, comfortable and natural-looking.

Q: Is the daughter’s hair thin due to any health issues?

Alexia Belkina: No, in her case there wasn’t a health condition that I was aware of. Her natural hair was simply very fine and lacked density.

However, hair density and the condition of the scalp and natural hair are always things I take into consideration before applying extensions. I adjust the size of the bonds, the amount of extension hair attached to each section, and the placement based on how much weight the natural hair can safely support.

With very fine hair, it’s especially important not to overload the natural hair and to customize the application rather than following the same placement pattern for every client.

Q: Who is the best client for a cold bond method?

Alexia Belkina: It can be a great option for clients with fine or lower-density hair because the bonds can be made very small and customized to the individual. It also works beautifully for clients with normal-density hair who want additional length or volume without bulky attachment points.

The most important factor is that the client has enough healthy natural hair to safely support extensions. I evaluate every client individually because extensions are never truly one-size-fits-all.

My approach is always to work with the client’s natural hair rather than force the hair to accommodate a particular extension pattern.
