Beauty and Fashion Director, MODERN SALON

MODERN's Beauty & Fashion Director is the NYC based Editor and Art Director for Modern Salon Magazine and modernsalon.com. Maggie joined MODERN in the 1980's and has spent more than 3 decades covering the professional beauty industry around the world. In addition to writing articles, Maggie travels globally as a journalist to report on the latest trends, products and techniques in the professional beauty world. Known for a keen eye, Maggie has judged hundreds of national competitions including NAHA, and international competitions such as Wella International Trend Vision and Goldwell Color Zoom among others. As an Art Director, Maggie is responsible for hundreds of magazine covers and thousands of inside pages and features for Modern Salon and her sister publications. Among her many professional passions is ARTIST SESSION, the 2-day workshop she founded which offers direction and inspiration to hairdressers interested in learning how to do successful photoshoots. A graduate of Boston College, Maggie is the author of Great Looks (Doubleday) and, in the few minutes of spare time she has left, is working on a book for children that has NOTHING to do with beauty.

Malcolm Edwards Presents for L'Oreal Professionnel

L’Oreal Professionnel Products invited almost 100 international beauty editors from more than 25 countries to the L’Oreal Academy in Paris to learn from famed session artist Malcolm Edwards as he transformed models before our eyes. Using the Spring Summer 2011 collections as his inspiration, Edwards offered his techniques in creating perfect, runway worthy shapes including twists, updos and ponytails.

The Empire Tour! 100th School

EMPIRE EDUCATION GROUP just opened it's 100th school in Springfield, Pennsylvania. To celebrate the milestone, Empire CEO Frank Schoeneman, Empire Education Group's Chairman and CEO, took Modern Salon Media on a tour of the pristine center which already boasts 100 students. "We are most proud of how 'green' we were in creating this school," said Frank to Modern's Beauty and Fashion Director Maggie Mulhern. "We worked it in to everything from the low wattage lighting to the floor which was created with old tire rubber." Among the many "pluses" at the new school, the tour includes a focus on updated classroom design and the Empire created "right brain" focused textbooks. Most importantly Frank emphasizes the power of Empire's core purpose: "To create opportunities for people to improve their lives".

I just met up with Mike Karg, an old friend, international platform artist, educator and inventor of the KARG line of shears. "Most people don't realize I INVENTED dry cutting shears," says Karg. Fashion Fights Cancer

Fashion Fights Cancer, a fundraising event held in honor of the late Dr. David DePasquale who succumbed to cancer in the fall of 2009, was held this week at the DePasqaule Salon and Spa of Morris Plains, New Jersey. More than $50,000 was raised for St. Claire's Hospital of Denville, NJ through ticket sales and a silent auction. A highlight of the afternoon was a "fashion and beauty" battle, where 5 teams from the DePasquale Salon and Spa presented a fashion show offering the latest in fashion and beauty for fall/winter 2010.
