October is over. How did you do? How many business cards did you pass out last month during my challenge? I want to know. You can comment here on this posting or on my facebook page. You can also send me and email and I will share your experiences (anonymously if you wish).
As hairdressers, like chefs, photographers, artists, models, clothing designers, actors and many other professions, the perception of fame can be the difference between good and great.
Washington may seem a distant world, but a government shutdown offers lessons very close to home. It’s frustrating to witness the antics of politicians, and while you await your opportunity to voice an opinion at the ballot box, double check that your business is not riddled with the stuff of shutdowns.
What to do when a "beauty funk" hits and you've had it with making other looks and feel good.
As a school owner, parents would slip in that hairdressing was a perfect answer because their daughter/son had no business mind. I would gaze into the young person’s eyes and see passion.
Is it me or is the traditional game of hustle dying, or hopefully evolving for the better?
Salon professionals will leave the industry due to lack of income, yes. But, I wonder, was there was a bit of magical thinking prior to hitting bottom? Here, a few reality checks I offer beauty schools, assuming you want to succeed
When I was doing the Goldwell/KMS/Arrojo On Tour in NYC, one of my favorite people, Maggie Mulhern, asked me what my favorite movie was as a professional hairstylist. I had two answers at the time – “Vidal Sassoon: The Movie” and “Unzipped” (the Isaac Mizrahi movie) both for different reasons.
Hairstylists lie. It's in the job description.
I fudge the truth because it is often an insult. Truth has no concern nor does anything for a client’s comfort.
The games I like playing are games where everyone wins, games where life gets better. I fly Delta because I get upgraded a lot, I love Foursquare because it rewards me as the mayor (with a crown too) because I park my car in long term parking so often at the Allentown Airport and I love analytics because it tells me what I’m doing that people like, it’s all a game.
Growing up, I was never cool. Maybe not uncool, but I didn’t look anything like the collective consciousness of the time called "cool." Nope, I was just average, nothing extraordinary. And, what a gift average turned out to be.
My take is that waking up pretty is more about sticking to your goals and not confusing luck with getting to that desirable place in life. That great marriage, job, or body? It all comes from sincere effort.
