I’m in my 10th week at Pivot Point, and we’re just wrapping up our lessons on long hair design. I love being creative, but I have a hard time getting started. Because I don’t have much experience, I need to have an idea of what I want to do before I begin—but I’m not at the point where I feel confident enough to create a wearable look that doesn’t look too prom-y or avant-garde. It’s like I’m having a tough time finding a happy medium. Now that I got out the “Debbie Downer” in me, OH MY GOD! I love updos!
With the fall wedding season in full blaze, and homecoming dances right around the corner, here's a great new tool you can add to your line of up-do gadgets!

For Laurel's fifth wedding updo, we traveled to the north side of Chicago to visit one of the four Michael Anthony Salons. We met with master stylist Matina Koronakos, who created a romantic, but modern gathering of loose curls at the crown. It was big and beautiful. Don't be fooled by the casual and soft look -- every strand was thought out and carefully pinned.

Any of you who know Modern editor and bride-to-be, Laurel Smoke, know she's no shrinking violet. So when the creative director from Salon 1800 used the words "big" and "bold" in her e-mail, we knew Laurel would have to check it out. Extra points go to Becki for describing the bun she imagined as "a la Carrie Bradshaw." Sold!

The hair journey continues…this week bride-to-be and editor of Modern, Laurel Smoke, and I journeyed to the Chicago suburb of Lake Zurich to visit Salon Coccole for her second uber updo. We also picked up some great hair and make-up advice to share with you as you approach your fall wedding and homecoming season.

As many of you know, Modern editor Laurel Smoke is getting married this November and Chicago-area stylists have been eager to prove their updo prowess on her tresses.
Barbara Lhotan of ElieElie Salon in Winchester, Virginia, created this modern updo at a recent MODERN SALON Artist Session (modernsalon.com/artistsession). Here, she details the steps to get the look.
In the final installment of Laurel’s wedding updo competition, we took a trip to downtown Chicago’s Prink, where co-owner Rachel Glenn showed us her big, bold, beautiful updo that took our breath away.
