Redken artist Tracy Guthrie was inspired by the unpredictable, dangerous and many faceted behaviors of fire and smoke when she created the Smolder collection for the Chicago-based Ulta Salons.
The smoky white hair in these styles floats, twists and shoots upward in a confection of curl, wisps and airy texture.
Ember: Sections of dry hair were misted and spiral tonged. The resulting curls were back-brushed and molded by hand.
Spark: To create movement, sections were wet set on sponge rollers and the hair was roughed to build volume back to front.
Billow: Various sized irons were used to curl the entire head. Hair was finger styled and back-brushed with a soft bristle brush.
Plume: Hair was rickrack set on large hairpins and heated with a flat iron. Pins were removed and hair was styled for a full base and piece-y edges.
Seethe: Hair was rickrack set on foil in random sections, dried with a hood dryer to set the texture and back-brushed and coaxed into a side swept shape leaving the fringe smooth for contrast.
All styles were prepped and finished with Redken styling and finishing products.
