Day 5

Practicing on a mannequin while in quarantine is great, but this stylist had a willing real-life model: his wife, Fiona!

Over a five-day span while in quarantine, KMS stylist and educator Edwin Johnston took his wife’s hair from long to a pixie, with each day marked with a fabulous new cut.

Fiona had always had short hair up until five years ago when she started to grow it out. Once shelter-in-place orders started being implemented during the COVID-19 crisis, Edwin and Fiona started brainstorming on what projects they could take on to stay relevant with clients, staff and peers. It was Fiona who suggested the idea of being the model for a haircut.

The idea evolved into doing a different haircut for a day over the course of a week, taking Fiona's long hair into a pixie, with various, on-trend cuts in between. Edwin captured the journey on social media.

"I cut each day live on Facebook and Instagram using wo phones," he says. "We had everyone from clients, staff and other hairdressers from around the world watching. I would say on the live videos we have had well over 10,000 views over the week. We had a 10 a.m. start time for the week, and people just regularly tuned in.

"The photos from each day have given us lots to work with on social media. Just to have five cuts from one head of hair over a week is pretty cool. It certainly created a buzz and we’ve had tons of response and positive comments."

Edwin says his favorite cut of the five was the final cut on day 5 (rightfully so!). He says it was difficult thinking of the other shapes for days 1-4 because his mind was always set on his day 5 vision.

"My wife has a beautiful face and great features, so I knew it would look stunning on her," he says. "It reminds me of the our youth and ironically having this forced time off work, has allowed us to enjoy time with each other and given us a whole new outlook on our life together."

While everyone is at home during this time, Edwin recommends ways to stay productive, from getting out a mannequin head and practicing a look you've been wanting to try, planning out an upcoming photoshoot, or prepping for a social media blast that takes time to prepare.

"Time is something we all never have, now we’ve been given an abundance so use it wisely," Edwin says. "Through social media so many hairdressers are giving back by doing lives or offering their videos for free right now, so take advantage and learn."

Edwin and Fiona are currently dreaming up other challenges for the coming weeks. They have a daughter home with them who will likely become the next victim of a gorgeous transformation. We can't wait to see.
