Can fear lead to art? For 2017 NAHA Avant Garde winner Chelsea James, the answer is yes. “I start the creative process by thinking about something that interests me,” she reveals. “It could be something that’s happening in the world, maybe even a fear I have. An issue that’s important.” From there, her ideas take shape, and if she’s ever invited to comment about her work, she believes it starts a conversation that matters.

When Andrea Hans, co-owner of New York City’s Broome Street Society, took home the 2017 Salon/School Design Award, it was the ultimate industry validation of her dream to create a beautiful salon retreat. “Winning was so exciting for our entire team,” she says. “It was the culmination of a project we were really proud of.”

L’Oréal Professionnel Artist James is the owner of the Fōrma + Collective Salon in Denver. She has styled for music videos and New York Fashion Week, and her work has appeared in national publications.

Hans is a Master Stylist and colorist and co-owner of Broome Street Society in New York City.
