Extensions are always trending in the world of professional beauty, but lately, there doesn't seem to be a bigger buzzword for extensionists and their clients than wefts. Hand-tied applications of weft extensions continue to rise in popularity, and stylists are eager to learn the technique (that's why MODERN brought you this deep-dive into the subject back in November).

In December 2019, extensions and hair care expert Tony Odisho unvield the launch of the brand's new Weft Extensions. Odisho says his wefts are ideal for those looking to add volume, enhance texture, add length and increase density to their hair. Available in 14 shades, the wefts are designed to blend with a client's natural hair while also being gentle because they are applied without any heat, glue, tape or chemicals.

Although the extensions are applied by hand, they are machine-tied in a thin layer than allows for more customization. The wefts are added by using the beaded weft application method, which consists of first securing beads on the natural hair, and then sewing the wefts onto the beads.

Odisho's Tips on Mastering his Weft Extension Application:

  1. On the day of the application, hair must be clarified twice. After clarifying, completely dry hair and do not apply any products prior to the hair extension application, as the beads will slip if the hair is not clarified and dried properly.

  2. Section hair into quadrants and part with natural client’s hair part.

  3. For the first row, place four fingers up from the nape and space out subsequent rows as needed.

  4. For beading, make sure the first and last bead of each row are roughly 1” from hair line, depending on hair density. Apply the bead ¼” away from the scalp and make sure the beads are applied back to back (with no space left in between). The partings should be a ½” wide.

  5. Hold tool straight down, parallel to the part and apply beads from right to left.

  6. For the weft mapping, line up the weft with the first and last bead of the row and clip it into place using single prong clips.

  7. To sew the hair extension, start on second bead (aka “Anchor Bead”) from the right side of the head.

  8. Using triple knot technique, secure weft on second bead.

  9. Using lock knot, secure weft on second bead.

  10. Move to first bead from right, using two lock knots, secure weft on first bead and move to left (going back to second bead), use lock knot.

  11. Continue moving to the left, using lock knots until reaching the first bead on the left

  12. Using two lock knots, secure weft on first bead on the left

  13. Move to second bead, use lock knot and triple knot to secure weft

  14. Trim thread and excess weft.

  15. For a proper removal, stitch row of wefts together on each end to remember placement. Then, snip thread, avoiding natural hair and extensions and remove entire weft, making note of which row the weft came from. Finally, loosen beads with pincers and remove from hair amd dispose of beads. Please note that the beads cannot be reused. The weft extensions from Tony Odisho can be worn for up to 8 weeks and can be reapplied up to three times after the initial application.
