It’s not really a mullet, but the piecy, shaggy, disconnected style seen on the Marc Jacobs runway at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week made KMS California Artistic Team member Joi Rooks think of the often maligned look.
“This fall, I’m loving the mod mullet—it’s super easy to maintain and it’s really chic. The back is slightly longer than the sides like a mullet, but the styling makes it fresh and modern,” says Rooks, owner of Fresche Salon in Atlanta.

GET THE LOOK:
On medium or longer length hair, determine the length of the perimeter first by razor cutting the edges to create a shaggy, lived-in feel and a piecy texture. Cut an oval shape of shorter hair around the fringe and front of the face and angle the sides and back to be longer.
Find a starting guide by choosing a facial feature, like the tip of the nose, and cut horizontal layers throughout the entire head—this will create a chunky layered top for the mod mullet with irregular edges. The dual textures modernize the look.
Style and finish with KMS California HAIRPLAY messing crème. Work through towel-dried hair and air or blow dry for fullness, chunky texture and a casual sexy style with lots of movement.
