Head positioning is one of the most important things to consider while cutting chin length hair, says Caci Stauffer (@hotsaucehair), a Phoenix, AZ stylist who specializes in beautiful bobs.  She shares her tips and techniques for getting the best results, including this reminder on several issues to address before putting down those scissors.

“When her head was in the normal, straight-forward position her haircut looked complete. Then we tilt her head, moving her ears closer to her shoulders and the results are in and ... the haircut is NOT COMPLETE. The ‘little bug hairs’ come out and are exposed in this position.”

Stauffer says this happens for a few reasons:

  1. HEAD POSITION: “I didn’t cut her hair with her head tilted this way (to show the difference).”

  1. ELEVATION: “I used my fingers to hold her hair on the sides sections so it  wasn’t truly at natural fall. There will always be graduation if the hair isn’t at natural fall. Sometimes, graduation is wanted however in this situation it isn’t. It’s a huge reason a lot of bobs are cut dry.”

  1. THE EAR: “I mean, I know we use them but, ugh, they can be trouble with bobs. Some people comb the hair over the ear and do the ‘tap, tap, taparoosky,’ but I just split the hair around the ear and pretend it’s not there. This way works best for me but I do always have a little cleaning up to do around the ear.  Once you’ve addressed these issues and do the detail work your bob is complete!”
