Redken artists Sam Villa and Dhaniel Doud teamed up for this MODERN session to create a new look for a model with naturally curly, virgin hair. “My objective was to make the graduation the hero,” says Villa, who cuts using compressed, larger sections for a soft edge. “We are looking for discipline, and to create careful disconnection.”

Doud, who smoothed the hair with Redken’s Shape Control prior to finishing the cut, says it’s important for smoothers to remove bulk and frizz, but maintain texture. “Shape Control gives the client more texture control and allows versatility,” Doud says. “It offers that smooth look without spending hours to achieve it. Smoothing treatments have revolutionized our industry over the past three years. Clients today have more options and are leaving the salon happier than ever.”
