Of course by now we all know that October is EVERYTHING PINK month in order to heighten awareness of Breast Cancer. We've seen pink blow dryers and flat irons, pink foils and dozens of other pink salon items. There are plenty of opportunities to Think Pink, but one of the most fun (and practical) things to cross my desk that could add some laughter to your salons AND home are these VERY COOL and VERY PINK rubber gloves.
Louis Angelo, an artist at the magnificent Garren salon in NYC, is a regular at updating the looks of his many celebrity clients. Most recently he tweaked the locks of Victoria’s Secret model Alessandra Ambrosio giving her a rock star shag with a flattering fringe. Angelo, who used Rene Furterer Volumea Shampoo and Vegetal Spray to create the look, believes this will be one of the hottest looks for fall:
David Colvin is a fabulous hairdresser, practicing his artistry at the Arrojo Salon in NYC. He was the lead for the Katie Gallagher Collection presented at this past Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York. Although he has worked behind the scenes at many fashion shows, it was the first time he was selected at the LEAD hairdresser...made even better because it was the first time Gallagher presented at fashion week!
New York is SOOOOO buzzing. It's all about the filming of Sex and the City 2...which is shutting down streets all over the city, much to the delight of most New Yorkers. Frank Barbosa is the lead hairdresser and is getting ready to leave for some off-site locations. However, we got to fire off a few questions before he packed up to leave:
Sometimes the make up designs are so over the top on the runway that they border on the freakish and TRYING WAY TOO HARD to shock. While I love "statement" hair, pretty, wearable make up designs are always the best. Temptu, one of the few truly professional makeup lines, created the make up designs for the Max Azria’s Spring/Summer 2010 collections at the most recent Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week.
Do you know the expression “walk the walk”? Basically, it means “practice what you preach”. Well, the people at Aveda walk the walk, talk the talk and really really practice what they preach.
Very few shows at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week offer the magnificent stylings for both men and women on the same runway. One of the few (and one of my favorites) was the MONARCHY Collection... and it offered the best of both worlds (meaning the worlds of hair and fashion). 13 stylists, led by Sean James for Rusk, worked fast and furiously on these models, many of whom walked in with just 5 minutes for prep!
AMERICAN CREW launched its new Trichology Hair Recovery System this week at a press event in NYC. Held at the very cool Standard Hotel in the Meat Packing District, the American Crew team recreated a classic barbershop and demonstrated the new products on two hot male models.
Thomas Dunkin and the Sebastian styling team made several appearances during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York, but my absolute FAVORITE Dunkin silhouette appeared at the Diego Binetti collection. The Grecian-inspired imperfect design featured haphazard braids placed in an asymmetrical pattern that were both individual and carefree. The hair was as unique and beautiful as the fashion.
Juan Carlos Obando show was held off site at Milk Studios on W. 15th Street. There I met with the famed and fabulous Didier Malige who was working with an army of fantastic hairstylists (all members of Number 4 High Performance Hair Care’s Style Bureau) to create a very textured, exciting and undone silhouette.
J Mendel is a fave show for all the top editors, stylists and buyers. The fashions at this gallery show were breathtaking and the hair, designed by Odile Gilbert (for Moroccanoil), was full, wide and totally perfect.
Every encounter has been something special… from that first handshake at an event to the pedi-cab ride after a press conference to our “air kiss” at his first tent show. I have grown to expect wonderful things from Christian Siriano….
The Carolina Herrera Spring 2010 Collection was breathtaking from head to toe. Orlando Pita using Moroccanoil went ABOVE AND BEYOND creating magnificent hair designs for the magnificent fashions. These low twisted chignons were accented with long strips of seed-beads that were subtly laced throughout the hair. The intricate forms were an homage to the beautiful texture and patterns in Japanese baskets. The powerful runway lights lit up the hair without taking away from the fashion. This was WOW hair! Bravo Orlando.
One of the favorite shows for fashionistas during MERCEDES BENZ FASHION WEEK is RODARTE. A coveted ticket, this show is always a standing room event. For the Sping/Summer 2010 season Rodarte was sponsored by Aveda, led by Odile Gilbert and supported by Aveda lead Dennis Clendennen.
Rodney Cutler and I just met over a cafe latte to discuss his favorite looks from fashion week. Rodney did more than 30 shows for Redken and while he has MANY favorite looks, I forced him to narrow it down to his five faves...many of which I watched in awe from my seat:
I expected something great...but not THIS great. It was a special and wonderful Oribe weekend. More than 300 salon owners and artistic directors descending on Chelsea Piers in NYC to meet and work with Oribe himself. This hands on ORIBE HAIR CARE shoot/show/educational event defies description. Since pictures (and videos) speak thousands of words, click here for the 8 minute journey (but plan on going to the next one in the Spring)....
Elke Von Freudenberg doesn’t pluck and tell. I know this because yesterday I met with this eyebrow specialist who has shaped, waxed and tweezed some pretty high profile Hollywood types over the years. Try as I might to get her to dish up some names, she wouldn’t play. Elke is a pretty smart cookie for reasons other than not giving up her stars.
