Colorist
As one of the most respected colorists in the industry, the former Color Director for Nick Arrojo and Rodney Culter in NYC, is a cultural junkie inspired by international cosmopolitan influences from fashion and global trends to technology. He specializes in social media and salonable haircolor, and creates new experiential educational formats highlighting technology, technique and culture. We have a new operations director at our studio and she will be instrumental in helping us get ready for 2012. I love being prepared and find most salon owners and stylists are too busy to prepare, which means they do what they have always done and get the same results. I am telling you, in 2012, we are not going to do the same, we are going to do BETTER! The one thing that will insure success is a good plan - remember, you plan for success, failure just happens.
I started a new Facebook page, because I learned long ago the best way to create success is to start with something successful. Otherwise, when success happens simply because of luck, it is rarely maintained or duplicated (just look at most Lottery winners that end up poor again.) True success can be shared and even duplicated, just look at Starbucks or even martial arts to see some of the many levels of success we can transfer to others and other places. With this in mind, the Facebook page “10 Things I’ve Learned” has started and I would like to share it with you.
Matrix Artistic Director Patrick McIvor answers your color questions.
As many of you probably know, I have been with my wife for a long time - 20 years together, 15 years married this month, and that is a great thing.
So tape, pasties, an ice cream scoop and a candle, while actually being very professional - LOL (really). Here's how it happened, queue the dream sequence.
I have been lucky to have had so many of opportunities in my life. Some are unique experiences, some help me grow exponentially, some teach me and some challenge me, but all make my life better by letting me learn.
Sometimes you read something that crystallizes your thoughts in ways your own words can’t. I recently reread and finished Dr. Lew and Colin Walsh's book "ON" which is an inspirational series of ideas and insights that allow us to look at ourselves and have a better life. Last year, Matrix created a unique opportunity for six recent beauty school graduates with the Spread the Love campaign. Two hundred beauty school students and recent graduates applied. The final six would travel in pairs throughout the United States meeting salon professionals and finding out what we as hairdressers do. Color America in the Company of Patrick McIvor–NYC, featuring David Adams, Adrienne Rogers, Rodney Cutler and myself, was AMAZING. Attendees were treated to an amazingly special experience and I got to try out some new trick with my iPad. Most stylists just see the end product of a show, so I thought I would give an inside peek at the whirlwind of preparation that goes into prepping for a show.

May is National Domestic Abuse Awareness Month, and during the first week of May, salon professionals across the country came together through individual events to Break the Silence, Break the Cycle and Save Lives.

When Cosmetologists Chicago invited my to become involved with Color America it was important to me to always have the most amazing friends who prove themselves everyday by making our industry and stylists behind the chair better. With artists like Kris Sorbie, Chrystofer Benson, Sue Pemberton, James Edick, John Simpson, Kimberly Kimble, Kelly Cardenas and Jo Blackwell-Preston, so far, Color America in the Company of Patrick McIvor has done just that, and this next time is no exception.
The funny thing about growth is the fact that when we grow, we no longer fit into what we grew from. It is a natural occurrence, but many times we don’t notice, or grow as adults, because growth becomes more incremental in our daily lives and less ground breaking.
As I shared in my last blog, Color America has been an amazing opportunity to be involved with Cosmetologists Chicago and the America’s Beauty Show Team. The event in Fort Worth gave me the opportunity to work with another amazing colorist—Jo Blackwell-Preston.
As I shared in my last blog, Color America has been an amazing program and it’s been an honor to be involved with Cosmetologists Chicago and the America’s Beauty Show Team.
What an amazing opportunity it is to be involved with Cosmetologists Chicago, the America’s Beauty Show Team, and to be part of Color America. With the huge success of our first Color America in Chicago, it was a daunting thought to plan our second Color America in the Company of Patrick McIvor, but WOW what an outcome.
There is an old tale of how, through the course of events, the lack of one nail, a shoe could not be put on the horse and then a solider could not fight on the horse, and ultimately the battle is lost because of the loss of this one soldier. I recently had a series of unfortunate events that had the opposite effect.
