As a school owner, parents would slip in that hairdressing was a perfect answer because their daughter/son had no business mind. I would gaze into the young person’s eyes and see passion.

Is it me or is the traditional game of hustle dying, or hopefully evolving for the better?

Salon professionals will leave the industry due to lack of income, yes. But, I wonder, was there was a bit of magical thinking prior to hitting bottom? Here, a few reality checks I offer beauty schools, assuming you want to succeed

Hairstylists lie. It's in the job description. I fudge the truth because it is often an insult. Truth has no concern nor does anything for a client’s comfort.

Growing up, I was never cool. Maybe not uncool, but I didn’t look anything like the collective consciousness of the time called "cool." Nope, I was just average, nothing extraordinary. And, what a gift average turned out to be.

Since this is a forever-changing industry, you need to be able to keep up with the techniques for cut and color. We are fashion interpreters and need to know not only what’s happening in hair today, but tomorrow and beyond. Even if you don’t like what’s happening in hair at the time, you have to be in the know because your clients may come in and ask for it. Hairdressers thrive on inspiration. If we don’t feel challenged, we become complacent and then boredom sets in. It’s important to always find something fresh to motivate you and keep you going throughout your career.
