For this session, Mario McDowell, Brazilian Heat After Dark platform artist, created several braided finishes. “It’s a mix of everything—and a little messy, blending perfect and imperfect,” he says.

Many modern styles require braids for texture, support and fashion, McDowell says, yet many of his shapes integrate braids into the finish. “The angles are as important as asymmetry,” he says. “That’s what makes it modern.”
