Stylists are nothing if not inventive and clever. Amy Whitaker ofErgun Tercan European Salonin Denver, Colorado, submitted a photo and description of her problem-solving work to modernsalon.com.

Whitaker's client, who had very long, thick hair, requested a curly updo with small, tight curls for an event. Whitaker knew it would be hard to do all-over curls on the copious amounts of hair and have it look like anything less than a pillow on her client's head.

Her solution was successful in three ways: she created a braided circle on the un-curled hair, which succeeded in eliminating some potential volume, creating a base for pinning and for cutting service time. Click through to get the steps!
