As the weather warms up, many Americans are planning their summer getaways, but sadly fewer Americans are taking full advantage of their vacation time. Our Wellness Blogger Mary Wilson outlines why it's important to give yourself a vacation.

As summer heats up and we see friends traveling and sharing those great shots of amazing places on social media, do you get excited to do the same or do you dread being away from work and your day-to-day routine? If you’re like many Americans, taking time off from work to relax and recharge may seem daunting.
There is a dangerous trend in the US that shows that many Americans do not fully utilize their vacation time. According to a recent U.S. Travel Association poll, American workers took an average of 16.3 vacation days in 2019, compared to 17.2 days in 2018. This means that workers left about 2 days of vacation unused on average and across the US a 9% increase compared to the previous year.
Some of the reasons why include fear of missing important work opportunities, vacation shaming and the fear of falling behind at work! As my friend Nina Kovner recently shared, burnout is not a badge of honor. When you recognize physical and mental fatigue and negative thoughts towards work, it might be time for a much needed break!
Summer getaways offer us a chance to relax, improve mental and physical health, spend time with friends and family, explore new experiences, foster personal growth, and ultimately enhance our overall well-being.

Here are a few reasons why summer breaks/getaways are so crucial:
Summer breaks offer a chance to temporarily escape from the pressures of work, school, or daily responsibilities. Taking time off allows you to unwind, reduce stress levels, and improve your overall well-being.
Engaging in leisure activities during summer breaks/getaways has numerous benefits for your mental and physical health. Whether it's spending time outdoors, trying new hobbies, or simply taking a break from technology, these activities can improve your mood, boost creativity, and increase physical activity.
Summer breaks provide an excellent opportunity to spend quality time with family and friends. Whether you plan a vacation together or simply enjoy local activities, these shared experiences can strengthen relationships and create lasting memories.

Summer breaks are ideal for exploring new places, trying new activities, and experiencing different cultures. Whether you prefer a relaxing beach vacation, an adventurous hiking trip, or a cultural city tour, summer breaks can broaden your horizons and provide valuable learning experiences.
Taking a break from the daily routine allows for personal growth and self-reflection. It provides an opportunity to reassess goals, set new priorities, and gain fresh perspectives. Stepping outside of your norm during a summer getaway can lead to personal development, improved creativity, problem solving and increased confidence.
Are you convinced yet? Maybe it’s time for a girls' trip or a romantic get-away, perhaps an epic family adventure or a retreat on your own! Regardless of your choice, know that it is both necessary and well earned. Go ahead, get started planning your next vacation.
