Competition hair, by design, can be and frequently is, extreme. Colors and silhouettes often scream for attention. This hair tends to be a bit “much” for the everyday client, but can certainly serve as inspiration for the client who wants something special. MODERN invited Goldwell Global Zoom winners on set to create competition-worthy color and edge that can still be worn by the everyday client.

Global Zoom, Goldwell’s international color and cut competition, is a breeding ground for talent. The annual competition is open to artists in all levels of experience in the three different categories of New Talent, Creative and Partner. 2015 was a special year for the United States, producing two artists who ultimately won the overall competition, beating out competitors from 30 countries.
MODERN was so impressed with gold winners Corinne Brown (Partner Category) and Harley LoBasso (Creative Category) that we invited them to the Water Street Studio in New York City to demonstrate how they use their award-winning skills to transform a classic-looking client into a competition-worthy model for a special event.
The artists worked together on each model. The hair was prepped for a more traditional finish with a seamless base color and tasteful cut. Tress Couture clip-in extensions by Hotheads were color melted and personalized and then placed to create texture and add volume and give (temporary!) pops of color.
Brown and LoBasso used elements of nature as inspiration. For shorter-haired Jen, a sunflower was used for color selection and placement while the northern lights were used for longer-haired Sarah.
“Your commercial client can still have a great look with interesting color,” Brown says. “Colored extensions allow for a competitive look without the commitment.”
Adds LoBasso, “it’s a win for the hairdresser looking to do something fresh and fun and a win for the client who is looking for versatility.”
Also debuting in this collection, Goldwell’s Varis blowdryer, flatiron and round brush collection.
