Station Break: Sally Hershberger
Sally Hershberger has been a favorite of trendy New Yorkers, celebrities, fashion photographers and directors for years. To keep everyone happy, she travels between New York City and Los Angeles to work on clients in her salons on either coast (two in NYC, one in LA). And when her clients head home, they maintain their looks with the Sally Hershberger line she created in 2008.
The Winter Rush: Holiday Marketing
Are you checking your holiday list twice this season? If you’re already getting a taste of the winter madness that’s right around the corner, and you need some ideas, check out what MODERN’s Proview Panel members are doing to prepare for the busy time ahead.
Gray's Anatomy
From the London runways to trend-machines Lady Gaga and Kate Moss, gray’s cool as gunmetal. Celebrities are really lightening, then using ’50s-style toners with violet bases, says Ian Gavet, who runs a namesake San Francisco Academy. When real graying clients want to go “back to natural,” you must control tonality and reflect.
Color Trends: Glow Getters
With the bob going top-round and end-layered, grayday, winter-friendly shades that add inner light accent movement best. “Rich reds, mochas and cooler violet browns are ideal base shades,” says Pon Saradeth, owner of Pon International in Anaheim Hills, California, “while golden or copper tones add extra warmth, placed over the top.” His approach:
Color Biz: Personalization Plus
George Stockman’s success secret came from his father: Always do more than you’re paid to do. Applying that advice to his Showoffs Hair Salon in Dunbar, Pennsylvania, he increased business by 30 percent in the last 12 months by raising the value of services. Example: He colors one area of the head (say, a large crown-area panel) one level lighter than the rest of the hair, which personalizes the color design. “A competitor down the street just can’t duplicate it,” says Stockman.
The Celebrity Effect
Clients want what they see on celebrities, and attendees at joint Empire Education Group/Nick Arrojo MOB (Master of Beauty) Tour of Beauty presentations learn how to deliver the latest styles with confidence. Kicking off the eight-city tour in NYC, Arrojo demonstrated The Asymmetric with a Jessica Bielinspired Inverted-V color, the “swing” layer cut with X-Pattern color (for a top spotlight effect a la Kelly Clarkson) and the “sqround” with partial shading that peeks though interior layers. The focus: consumer driven and immediately usable.
