Michael Shaun Corby at Miss California
Anyone who has ever done hair behind the scenes at a pageant knows that chaos comes with the territory. Space is normally tight and power is usually weak. Choose Beauty: Gary Howse
I chose beauty because: “I started riding/working with horses when I was 10 years old. By the time I was 15, I was working as a professional groomer on Arabian horses and traveling all over the western U.S. Horse grooming fads for upper-level shows came and went, but it quickly became obvious to me that I loved following them. It wasn’t long before that love took me down the hair color aisle at my local drugstore. By the time I was finished I could bleach and tone a horse’s mane—no problem. Other trainers started asking me for color advice.

Why I chose beauty: “When I was 16 years old I went shopping with my mother and stopped at the beauty counter of Laura Mercier. I started playing around with the rent shades and did my mom’s make-up right there in the store. The real make-up artist noticed how well I used the color and ended up giving me a job for various Laura Mercier events.
Choose Beauty: Kenneth Darrell
Why I chose beauty: “In 1985, after spending several years as a Harley Davidson mechanic and motorcycle enthusiast, my girlfriend came into the shop one afternoon with a new cut and color—at very first glance, a light bulb went off. Not only was I blown away by how great she looked, I was so impressed with the positive and glowing effect it had on her, that it triggered me to want to learn more about the hair business.

My Taming Tale
Recently, the team at Global Keratin flew to Chicago from Miami and invited me to receive a hair taming treatment they said would increase the amount of shine in my hair, decrease my styling time and help tame the curls. I’m not going to lie, I was slightly nervous about receiving a texture reduction service—but if there was ever a time in my life where I needed extra time on my hands away from the blow dryer—this is it!!

How cool is this comb? It's called the "Double Detangler" and is designed by Ouidad, the pioneer of the curl movement. Ouidad created this tool for her clients to utilize her "rake and shake" technique at home.
Green Appliances
The first one I heard about and had a chance to play with privately is the Centrix Q-Zone Quiet Dryer by Cricket. Leonardo Manetti, Pasquale Ferrante and Marco Santini, co-owners of the Ion Studio in NYC use the Q-Zone because they believe it complements their “green” philosophy.
Erwin Gomez…Drawn into the White House Scandal
And so it happened the other day when Tareq and Michaele Salahi showed up before “crashing” the STATE DINNER at the White House right before Thanksgiving. “They were here for 7 hours,” says Gomez who did her make up while stylist Peggy Loakim placed Great Length Hair Extensions and styled her hair. “I even helped her wrap her sari!” he says. “They left from here to go directly to the White House. This is such a scandal.”

Tips from Toronto
In high-end Yorkville, a neighborhood of Toronto that's about a mile and a half around, 103 salons and spas are doing business. It's a desirable area for a salon: foot traffic is high, and so are the price points, plus Prada, Gucci and Dolce are your neighbors. But, there's a lot of competition, too. We talked to two salons on opposite ends of one street—one opened two years ago, the other, almost 42 years ago—to find out their secrets to surviving and thriving in a crowded marketplace.
The Colour Organizer
Joshua Boos decided he needed to “tame the beast” in the backroom of his Moxie Salon and Beauty Hub salon in Beacon, New York. While he does not consider himself an “inventor” necessarily, he has designed things to make life easier in the salon. His latest design, created just last month, is called THE COLOUR ORGANIZER, a system that Boos says keeps all the color and color items in the dispensary in one place.
