Just days after landing on the cover of Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People in the World issue (see below), Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence shocked the (hair) world: She cut her hair.

With the help of her go-to hair expert, celeb stylist Mark Townsend, Jennifer brought her nearly mid-back-length locks just up above her shoulders for a full-on, modern shag--heavy on the layers, face-framing pieces and slight fringe. Colorist Lorri Goddard--who lightened Jennifer back up after she wrapped filming for Hunger Games--also added even more hand-painted blonde pieces to Jennifer's new 'do.

We've already discussed the recent celebrity movement to shorten up--see: Karlie Kloss, Vanessa Hudgens, Demi Lovato--so why is Jennifer's so noteworthy? Answer: This is the first time she has ever rocked shorter hair.

Townsend explained to Harper's Bazaar how Jennifer made the spur-of-the-moment decision, just before a red carpet appearance:

"Jennifer showed up an hour before call time, and as she opened the door she was like, 'Mark, I want to cut it all off.' I was like 'What? Are we allowed to do that?' And she said, 'Of course, it's my hair!'

"She didn't want the conventional asymmetrical bob (shorter in the back, longer in the front). She wanted tons of layers--so we went with a full-on shag, with bangs and a lot of face-framing layers. I loosened up the ends by chopping into them with thinning shears. As I cut, I lost track of how many times she said 'I love it!' She was super excited. It's the shortest her hair has been her whole life."

And, as it turns out, Jennifer has the perfect natural texture to wear this length and style in the coming warmer weather, Townsend said: "She doesn't have to worry about keeping frizz down. She can just rock her natural texture."
