The Tonight Show’s Jimmy Fallon started growing a beard on Memorial Day. When he was ready to shave it off but keep his ‘stache,  Brooklyn barber Russell Cordeiro, of Art & Autonomy Salon in Manhattan and Persons of Interest Barbershop in Brooklyn,  was brought in to perform some grooming goodness.

The studio audience was tasked with choosing which style of mustache Cordeiro would convert the beard and they went with the classic handlebar. “It can actually take up to six months to grow a handlebar mustache, depending on how far you want to take it,” Codeiro says. “There is trimming and maintenance involved.”  Cordeiro notes that clients have been requesting mustaches with increasing frequency lately and asking for advice in growing them. “When I got the call about going on the show, I thought they were really on point with the trend.”  Cordeiro works with the 18.21 Man Made Groomingproduct line and 18.21 gifted Fallon with a product selection for his mustache maintenance.

Author and psychologist Allan Peterkin also appeared on the show with Cordeiro to talk about the cultural history of mustaches and his book, One Thousand Mustaches. Peterkin shared that the average man with a ‘mo touches it 760 times a day and that in Eureka, Nevada it is illegal for men with moustaches to kiss women.
