On April 22 (Earth Day) a whole lot of hair will be hitting the floor at many Aveda Salons and Institutes during the brand’s 24-hour global hair cutting marathon. Scissors will be snipping at record speeds as Aveda stylists from around the world volunteer their haircutting expertise in a company-wide fundraiser to support clean-water causes.

The goal is to set a Guinness World Records title for raising the most money for charity through hair cuts in a 24-hour period. To help achieve it, guests will be asked to make a donation in return for the perfect haircut.

Cut-A-Thon proceeds will support Aveda Earth Month, the company’s annual, month-long effort that raised more than $4.6 million last year. Since the inception of the Earth Month program in 1999, Aveda professionals in more than 30 countries have collectively raised more than $26 million to help support organizations that directly effect environmental change. More than $20 million of this amount has been designated for clean water-related causes since 2007.

In April 2013, Aveda’s global network of beauty professionals will once again organize thousands of fundraisers to benefit more than 40 clean water organizations that work to preserve and protect clean water access in a variety of ways – from water resource protection education in Taiwan, to advocacy for the ecosystem health and scenic beauty of the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Limited-edition Aveda Light the Way Candles will also be available for purchase while supplies last. Aveda donates 100 percent of the purchase price (based on its SRP $12) from Light the Way Candle to Global Greengrants Fund, a non-profit that channels high-impact grants to grassroots groups working to solve pressing environmental problems.

The hair-cutting marathon kicks off in Sydney, heads to Tokyo and then continues across Asia to Seoul and Taipei, winding its way around the rest of the globe in a whirlwind tour touching down in locales like Zurich, Berlin, London and Madrid. The cut-a-thon will conclude in North America.

Whether you’re going for a short shag, sleek bob or long and luscious layers, letting an Aveda stylist make the cut on Earth Day will do a world of good for all concerned.
