Why I chose beauty:

In 1989 I returned to home base from college to attend a local community college. The credit hours were much less expensive than my four-year private education, so the plan was to take all the credits that would transfer and return to university. While home I decided to also return to my high school job for some extra cash.

I became totally bored taking just general education classes and decided to attend a local cosmetology school. One year later I graduated and started my first salon job.

I had finally found a place where I fit in. It wasn't long until I began teaching and approaching stage work what a perfect fit! I could utilize my background in fashion (that high school job was in a bridal salon), my training in college (Berklee College of Music), and create art in my own way, all while making house payments.

The best part of the hair industry for me is there is no chance of boredom.  Just as I was getting used to serving clients, a sales consultant asked me to attend a training and possibly become a teacher for a color company. I was skeptical, but thought it could never hurt to have relationships and knowledge. That decision not only kept me on a strong career path, but made my life exciting. I utilized the music and entertainment training with production, choreography and platform work for years of major shows. I put those classes we never think we will use into motion  (verbal communications and public speaking).  I've even spent almost two decades traveling and meeting some of the best people in the world (hairdressers)!

The most astonishing part is it's not over yet! I feel I've just begun to explore the next phase even after 18 years. I've owned Perfect 5th for 10 years now, and   joining forces with L'Oreal Professionnel has given me the creative expression I crave: teaching, learning, creating and mentoring. My biggest problem? Finding enough time to accomplish everything on my list!

In Dubai, Clients Visit the Salon Every Week. Here’s What That Market Can Teach You

In Dubai, a salon visit isn’t an appointment. It’s a weekly routine, and clients can spend $800 to $1,400 a month on it, according to Gaurav Tripathi of MADI International. On October 6-8, 2026, the market behind those numbers opens its doors as Beautyworld Dubai marks its 30th edition at the Dubai World Trade Centre, bringing together distributors, brands, stylists and salon owners from all over the world.
