Amy Makin (@themakoshark) of The Secret Warehouse, Liverpool, England, loves "transforming my clients hair and doing big color changes or color corrections." Makin always begins each service with a full consultation including tests on skin and strands to check porosity.

Here she shares the details for this transformation:

"My new client Janine came to me a few weeks ago wanting a new look. She wanted to stay really light but hated her roots coming through so often. I thought the best solution would be too take her to a lighter/cleaner blonde, but give her a super ashy root tint, to match her own natural color - so that when her roots come through they won't be so recognizable. We also didn't want to use any bleach as a previous color mishap had left Janine with broken areas of hair, and unintentional short layers."

Step 1: To the roots apply Schwarzkopf Igora Royal shade 8-11 (45ml) with 0-11 (45ml) mixed with 20vol creme peroxide. ("I use these super ashy tones to neutralize any warm tones that might come through.")

Step 2: Smudge the color down between 2-4 inches. ("Some areas were more 'bandy' than others - mostly in the back - where she had previously colored her own hair and it hadn't taken properly.")

Step 3: Process for 10 minutes then melt the root smudge into the super ashy quasi color on the mid-length and ends, using XP100 11-02 with 10vol. ("The violet pigment in this color is super strong so it neutralizes any yellow/cream areas and makes it crazy cool."

Step 4: Process for 30 - 35 minutes. Rinse.
