In 1924, a small business publication was launched, called MODERN BEAUTY SHOP.  It was only six years after a global flu pandemic.  More than nine decades later, MODERN SALON continues to support the beauty professional at every stage of their career.

Since early March, MODERN has been sending Pulse Surveys to our community--short answer questionnaires, asking about how they are navigating the global COVID-19 pandemic--and then sharing the results.

A recent study was sent out by email to a random sample of MODERN SALON’s qualified circulation list of salon professionals.  It was sent on May 15, 2020  and results were tabulated on May 21, 2020.

  • 51% of salon owners are having a tough time sourcing the PPE supplies you need to provide a safe and sanitized space

  • When it comes to taking clients temperatures, salons are almost evenly divided with 42% of salon owners plan on taking the temperatures of clients, and 43% not planning to

  • 51% of salons are not planning to ask clients to fill out a no-fault waiver, 20% are, and almost 30% are unsure or have not decided

  • Almost 20% of salons plan to raise prices when they reopen

  • When asked which services they would be eliminating, 20% said waxing, 18% said blow drying

  • 56% will be expanding their hours when they are able to reopen

When asked what they miss about not being in the salon, the overwhelming majority of responses were along these lines...

“I love what I do and I worked very hard to build my business. I feel like a piece of my heart is missing.”

“It’s my therapy, doing hair, and I miss being in the zone.”
