It's the hot new style popping up everywhere in beauty news: pixie cuts.
There's no denying that the sassy, short cut is popping up on the heads of celebrities and possibly even your clients; but the real question is…how do you teach your clients to maintain it?
Nicholas Penna, Jr., owner/lead stylist of SalonCapri in Newton and Dedham, MA shares with MODERN five flawless tips about pixie cuts.
Give your client the right cut. Contrary to popular belief, the pixie cut looks great on a variety of different facial structures. For oval faces, Nick Penna suggests soft bangs to accent the delicate angles and features of the face. "Stay away from the short and spiky look," Penna warns. "It can often elongate the neck and face."
A fun bob also works well with heart-shaped faces. "Try lengthy bangs toward the front and long layered chops in the back," he says. "If your client's have a round face, you can try going short and spiky or experiment with longer layers, both will lengthen their visage!"
Go Glam. If your clients are glamazons like Victoria Beckham and Halle Berry, recommend pomade and shine products. Nick recommends running a flatiron through their hair while pushing and angling pieces toward one side around the front of the face. For a sleek, shiny look, use a hot iron product, such as L'Oreal Professionnel Tecni.Art Hot Style Iron Finish. Add some volume using L'Oreal Professionnel's Densiforce Mousse at the crown of the head and slightly tease the locks. To maintain the hold, work in a molding cream. Top it off with few sprays of a shine product! Voila!
Turn up the volume. If your client has fine or thin hair, tousle in a lightweight mousse and blow out the hair with a round ceramic brush. "Shu Uemera's Fiber Lift is great for fine hair because it's light and won't weigh down your ‘do with grease," says Nick. "If you're more into mousse–go for one that's equally as lightweight."
Emphasize their look. Penna insists the most important thing about a pixie cut is that you teach your clients how to work it. "The pixie cut is great because it's a classic cut that can be tweaked and styled according to your [client's] mood, outfit, or personality," says Nick. "So be sure to [tell your clients to add] their own personal touches-add drama with dark, smoky eyes, or engage their fun flirty side with a jeweled headband or clip."
