With lots of "pomp" under celebratory circumstances, the 54th annual Grammys red carpet and performances didn't disappoint. We saw plenty of trends throughout the evening, with stars like Adele and Rihanna rocking lighter looks, Alicia Keys and others hitting new heights with their updos and some not-so-usual suspects surprising us with elegant and edgy styles. Take a look at who caught our attention during the show.

ADELE

Before mesmerizing Grammys-watchers with her performance and sweep of each category she was nominated in, Adele wowed on the red carpet with a shorter, Marilyn Monroe-esque golden style, a departure from her usually auburn and volumunious longer locks. Which brings us to another superstar exploring the blonder side of the street...

RIHANNA

Though much of the focus was on her sexy, barely-there ensemble, Rihanna's new blonde 'do caught a lot of eyes, as well. Though a bit on the "rooty" side, her texture and cut were an awesome throwback to the '80s days of Tina Turner (and maybe even a little Whitney Houston?).

ALICIA KEYS

She certainly wasn't the only one rocking heighth on the red carpet, but Alicia probably did it best. Her pomp lacked any signs of frizz, but excelled with definition and staying power.

JENNIFER HUDSON

Looks like her voice wasn't the only thing paying tribute to Whitney. Jennifer Hudson's usually sleek and lengthy strands took a break for the evening in favor of a voluminous, yet contained, bob during her rendition of "I Will Always Love You." Suits her well, don't you think?

PARIS HILTON

Despite our confusion over her presence at the awards show, we were pleasantly surprised to see Paris rocking a sophisticated but sweet side bun. Was the slight wave at the front intentional? Not sure, but it's a nice touch.

CARRIE UNDERWOOD

Never one to disappoint at a big event, Carrie's loosely pulled back style was the most elegant on the red carpet, with a slight twist--literally--at the back. It complemented her multiple gowns beautifully, and we're not surprised she made most of the best-dressed lists from the evening.
