The short cuts continue! Last month supermodel Brooklyn Decker made headlines when she tweeted "Chopped my hair OFF today!! Thank you!! I love!!" after celeb hairstylist Ted Gibson cut ten inches off her hair, resulting in a sexy, layered bob with soft fringe.
Now Ted Gibson and master colorist Jason Backe fill MODERN in with all the details.

MODERN: Why did Brooklyn decide to go short? How does her new cut complement her features?
TED GIBSON: Brooklyn wanted a major change and since I've worked with her before, she wanted me to do it. It's the right length to show off her neck. The layers help to bring out her eyes and soften the textured bob.
MODERN: Have you had a lot of requests from clients to go shorter? Is this a new trend that you're seeing?
TED GIBSON: The trend right now is shoulder length and longer. My girls, like Ashley Greene, are sporting this trend. On my blog, you can see the Gibson girls who are right with the trend: www.tedgibsonbeauty.com/blog
MODERN: What are some tips for hairdressers on achieving a great short cut?

TED GIBSON: Start off on damp hair and section straight down the middle of the head to the nape of the neck. Use diagonal partings to the ear and start with ½ inch sections. Cut your guide after your first section is cut continuing up the head to the top of the ear.
Continuing sectioning on one side of the head. Finish your shape-shorter in back and longer in the front. Once your perimeter is finished, it's time to cut interior. Start off at the top of the head. Find your guide, cut your length and cut to the front of the face. Take diagonal sections on each side of the head, pull hair to the guide and cut.
Using build itTM blow dry spray and hair sheetsTM both by ted gibson for control and movement. Twist hair around your fingers to give that tasseled, sexy modern feel. Finish off with beautiful hold hairspray.TM
MODERN: How did you achieve the color?

JASON BACKE: Brooklyn showed me a bunch of pictures she had collected of the kinds of color she was looking for (see photo, right). The goal was to step away from a single-process blonde and create something that had more depth at the root area, with strong variation in the blond tones using highlighting and lowlighting. I used my ultimate favorite INOA from L'Oréal Professionnel (shown below) with the new 10 volume developer to get the beautiful depth we were looking for. The end result has a beachy feel that looks touchable, soft and sexy.
MODERN: Why is the color so well suited to Brooklyn?

JASON BACKE: Brooklyn wanted to have a color that she doesn't have to be in the salon every three weeks having her new growth touched up. She also wanted something that she felt looked natural so she didn't need to wear makeup if she didn't want to like she did with her previous color. By having an in-depth consultation, looking at pictures of what she liked and really listening to what she wanted, we came up with a color that suits her perfectly.
