First job in beauty: Brad Johns Salon, 1997

Licensed: LIBS Beauty School, Brooklyn, NY, 1997

Three highlights of your career:

  1. I had just graduated beauty school and I was going into work at the Brad Johns Salon. A man was holding the elevator for me. When I looked up, it was Johnny Depp. He was going into the salon to get his color done for a movie he was shooting. I was frozen stiff!  I have been obsessed with him my whole life. That was my biggest star struck moment. A definite highlight for me!

  2. I had just been promoted at the John Frieda Salon, and I was asked to do the color for a celebrity makeover shoot with Sally Hershberger. It was my first shoot.  Needless to say, it was very exciting!

  3. Donating makeovers to the Comedy Cures Foundation to people who have suffered great traumas or illness. It gives me a sense of purpose knowing that what I do can really help people to feel good about themselves no matter what their circumstances.  It is that moment when the transformation is revealed after the makeover. Seeing the look in their eyes. That is the best feeling ever.

Beauty legend you respect: Rita Hazan, salon owner. She has builot a thriving business, celebrity clientele and brand.

Choose beauty because: It never gets boring. There is always room to grow. It can be extremely lucrative. There will always be demand.

Tip: Patience, humility and hard work pay off.  You may have to be an assistant for a while. This is where your education happens. Always remember this is a service industry.

Quote or mantra: If you want your dreams to come true, wake up.

In Dubai, Clients Visit the Salon Every Week. Here’s What That Market Can Teach You

In Dubai, a salon visit isn’t an appointment. It’s a weekly routine, and clients can spend $800 to $1,400 a month on it, according to Gaurav Tripathi of MADI International. On October 6-8, 2026, the market behind those numbers opens its doors as Beautyworld Dubai marks its 30th edition at the Dubai World Trade Centre, bringing together distributors, brands, stylists and salon owners from all over the world.
