The Marco Signature Highlight Strategy

Marco Pelusi, renowned platform artist, educator, celebrity hair colorist and owner of Marco Pelusi Hair Studio in West Hollywood, is always a few steps ahead of color trends, keeping his clients looking fresh and ahead of the color curve.

While highlights are always in vogue, Pelusi says he’s currently focusing his dimensional highlighting on working with the round of the head, respecting the hair’s natural growth/fall patterns.

“I’m loving this current trend of the more relaxed, still natural-looking, off-scalp placement of the highlights, and then a bit of a pop in the front,” he says.

“My strategy can change and shift with the ever changing trends, and can work with a blonde, red or brunette,” he adds.

Strategies For All Shades

“With this redhead, I highlighted off-scalp first, with lightener and 20 volume, leaving some red/orange tones remaining in the hair,” he says. “Then, I took a Level 8 golden copper (in a demi color) and had fun placing it sporadically throughout the ends of the hair. I left out the root area, to give more of the shadow root effect, and not a money piece here.”

On the brunette and the blonde models, Pelusi used an off-scalp placement of the highlights with a slight money piece at the bang/fringe area (he used lightener and 20 volume developer on the blonde and on the brunette, a base color Level 6 natural with lightener and 30 volume highlights).
