As a Wella Educator, Signature Artist, and Master Color Expert, Erik Thrane (@erik.wella) knows a lot about doing hair in a way that best fits the client’s needs, as well as teaching others to do the same. Thrane’s passion for teaching his craft with a perpetual smile on his face is part of what makes him a great educator, but continuing to learn new techniques makes any educator even better at what they teach.
See some of Thrane’s best tips below.
1. Color Corrections
When working with color treated hair, Thrane advises to “ALWAYS do a strand test.” In this case, the strand test showed that the model’s dyed hair would lighten quite well, and Thrane was able to proceed with giving her a beautiful new copper color.
2. Lifting with Color
You may have heard that color doesn’t lift the color of one’s hair; it can only deposit color. Well, when you’re a stylist who knows some tricks and has high-quality product at your disposal, this philosophy isn’t always true. For this model, Thrane used Wella’s Koleston Perfect permanent color, which he says can lift natural, non-color treated hair up to five levels. This is how he was able to get this gorgeous brunette without lightening at all.
3. Never Stop Learning
Earlier this year, Thrane attended Wella’s Train the Trainer education event. He expressed gratitude for getting to learn some fresh techniques, showing off the adorable ‘Mixie’ cut he did on his model. His experience serves as a great reminder to never stop learning your craft.
