Alicia Perez had a hard time finding a model in her New Hampshire town. She finally found someone by reaching out to a friend in cosmetology school. “I ended up with such an amazing model,” Perez says. “If you want to do something for a competition, or for an avant gard collection like this and not having a model is what’s stopping you, put in a word at a beauty school and you’ll hopefully get a decent model—and a decent model equals a decent photoshoot!”

Kylie Bussing is known for bushing boundaries. So when it came to finding a model for her Color Zoom entry, she knew she had her work cut out for her: She not only needed a model, she needed a model who was willing to wear an alternative look for months. “I have gotten so many questions about how my model maintained this look in between the intial photoshoot and the time it took to hear back if we were going to be competing live,” Bussing says. “This collection was all about pops of color and pure tones, so as I designed this look I knew I would have to do it in a way where I could also take the color out for a look she was willing to wear in between competitions.”

Thousands of hairdressers from around the globe recently joined Goldwell in Vienna, Austria, for its annual Global Zoom world artistic event. The experience was packed with inspiring education, artistic presentations, the debut of Intrepid, Goldwell’s Couture Collection 2020 and, of course, the Color Zoom competition finale.

91 finalists participating in three categories—Partner, Creative and New Talent—recreated their photo submission that landed them in the finals, demonstrating their creativity and interpretation of the Remix Color Zoom Collection.

Within this group of top talent encompassing 38 countries were three artists from the U.S.—Creative Colorist: Sarajane Maples of Studio Sage in Jacksonville Beach, FL; New Talent, Alicia Perez of The Hair Company in Nashua, NH; and Partner: Kylie Bussing of The Hair Company in Nashua, NH.

Here, we share their photo finishes that brought them to Austria.

During the live gala and award presentations, John Moroney, Vice President Global Creative & Communication Kao Salon Division, shared that the annual event will be reimagined as the Kao Salon Global Experience, with a new challenge and a new Couture Collection, presented live in Amsterdam Fall 2020.
