Are you a trendy eater? More stylists are bringing meals to the salon in order to better control what they eat. Whole Foods has issued a forecast of dishes that all of you foodies will be chowing down in 2018. Healthy Beauty boils it down for you:
Floral Flavors. From subtle flavoring and little petals to entire flowers, a colorful garden is coming to dinner. You can try this trend with: 365 Everyday Value Lavender Lemon Granola; GoodPop Hibiscus Mint Frozen Pop; 365 Everyday Value Raspberry Geranium Fruit Bars; Belvoir Fruit Farms Elderflower Lemonade; and Whole Foods MarketTM Dark Chocolate Violet Marshmallow.
Powders. The powders range from turmeric, kale and cacao to matcha and maca root, and in powder form they land in lattés, smoothies, nutrition bars, soups and baked goods. They’re purported to help bodybuilding and provide collagen to enhance skin and hair. They come in products like: Gaia Herbs Golden Milk with Turmeric, Dates and Herbs; Amazing Grass Protein Superfood; RX Bars (made with powdered egg-white protein); Whole Foods Market Spirulina Powder; and MatchaBar Bottled Beverages.
Functional Mushrooms. If this is not a phrase you’ve heard before, you will soon. Typically an ingredient in dietary supplements, the functional mushroom category includes reishi, chaga, cordyceps and lion’s mane star now found in bottled drinks, coffees, smoothies, teas, broths, chocolate and coffee. Some body care products contain them as well. At the grocery store, functional mushrooms are found in: Om Reishi Mushroom Powder; Kettle & Fire Mushroom Chicken Bone Broth; Rebbl Reishi Beverages.
Middle Eastern fare. While harissa, cardamom and za’atar already are adding flavor to dishes like shakshuka, grilled halloumi and lamb, this year the Middle East will be further represented by pomegranate, eggplant, cucumber, parsley, mint, tahini, tomato jam and dried fruits. You’ll be seeing it in: Saffron Road Falafel Crunchy Chickpeas; Seed + Mill Tahini and Halva; Aphrodite Halloumi; and 365 Everyday Value Organic Tahini.
Foods you can trust. Transparency will be a trend this year, with stores and food brands giving more information than ever on how the animal contents are obtained, how plants are grown, the organic level, the calorie content and more. See it reflected it: Pole & Line Canned Albacore Tuna; Fair Food certified tomatoes and strawberries; and 365 Everyday Value Cage-Free Plus Eggs.
High-tech foods. Science is in fashion in the kitchen. Whole Foods cites “bleeding” vegan burgers, sushi-grade “not-tuna” made from tomatoes, new varieties of nut milks and yogurts and dairy-free choice like vegan frosting, brownies and crème brûlée. Specific examples include: Beyond Meat Burger; Ocean Hugger Foods Ahimi Vegan Tuna; Ripple Pea Milks; Kite Hill Dairy-Free Cheeses and Yogurts; and Puffed and popped snacks.
Puffed and popped snacks. Crunch is not new, but it’s showing up in untraditional items like cassava chips, puffed pasta bow ties, seaweed fava chips, puffed rice clusters and crisps in jicama, parsnip and brussels sprout options. Your grocery aisles may be displaying: Dang Sticky Rice Chips; JicaChips; 365 Everyday Value Organic Pea Crisps; and Unreal Dark Chocolate Crispy Quinoa Gems.
Tacos. Eat them for breakfast or for dinner’s dessert in all sorts of new forms: Siete Paleo Tortillas and Chips; Frontera Tortilla Chips and Fresh Tortillas; and 365 Everyday Value Korean Style Gochujang Hot Sauce.
Root-to-Stem. When the entire fruit or vegetable is used for food, the body benefits and garbage is reduced. This trend shows up in: Melon Seed Agua Fresca; Bagged Broccoli Slaw; and Sparkling beverages.
Sparkling beverages. Flavored sparkling waters are derived from new sources and offering traditional fruit as well as exotic flavors: Waterloo Sparkling Water; Sap! Maple and Birch Sparkling Waters and Seltzers; Stumptown Sparkling Cold Brew; Whole Foods Market Italian Sparkling Mineral Waters; and 365 Everyday Value Canned Sparkling Water.
