MODERN checked in with makeover expert Eva Scrivo to see if she would share her favorite overall looks from the 2015 Academy Awards.
"My criteria was based on the balance between beauty (hair/makeup) and fashion," Scrivo says. "Coco Chanel said that 'Fashion is architecture – it’s a matter of proportions.' This quote is actually under the heading of the "Fashion & Style" chapter in my book. It’s an entire chapter dedicated to achieving this balance between fashion and beauty. Pulling your entire look together with fashion and accessories is just as important as the haircut and color."
Here are Scrivo's three favorite looks from the 2015 Academy Awards:
Julianne Moore: "A perfect example of why wearing your hair pulled back helps to bring attention to the beautiful neckline of an evening dress," Scrivo says. "A deep side part in the hair with an impeccable makeup application gave her a look that was glamorous and sophisticated, while the soft bun in the back created balance, making the pulled back style look less severe. The hairstyle also mimicked the neckline of her dress. This is a good example of where a simpler hairstyle complements an ornate, beaded dress, rather than competing with it."
Lupita Nyong’o: "Her dress, by Calvin Klein, made literally of pearls, was a great example of how an overall line and color of a dress complement one’s features. The contrast between the white dress and her beautiful dark skin tone was a stunning combination that would not have looked as glamorous on a woman with a lighter skin tone. Her short hair, slightly dreadlocked, almost looked like a gentle beading in and of itself, matching the dress in texture. Her makeup was very neutral, which again kept the dress as the centerpiece of her ensemble. In this case, something like a bright red lip would have been too jarring and taken the attention from the overall look."
Naomi Watts: "This is one of the most modern dress choices I’ve ever seen at the Oscars, and is a great example of how her gently waved 'lob' (long bob) was the perfect of hairstyle for the overall look. Her asymmetric haircut softened the straight, horizontal lines of her dress, which, with the sequin bralette underneath, created a slimming effect to her figure. Her makeup colors, such as the deep burgundy lip, was a flattering choice with the metallic fabric of her dress, and was reminiscent of the late-1920s and early 1930s styles."
