Hair in the City, a shoot created by Rebecca Beardsley, owner of ShineForth Salon in Oakland California, was shot on the streets of Brooklyn and depics a "meeting up of old friends."
"The inspiration of Hair and the City came from the runway and the idea of taking something so simple, like a bobby pin and creating something very fashion-forward. The idea of slowly infusing volume and structure into hair that is usually flat shows a gentle progression of strength that is still feminine. I always use the woman herself as the focus of my inspiration, whether creating looks behind the chair, for the runway or editorial," says Beardsley.
LOOK #1: Up Style with Bobby Pin Accessory
STEP 1: Apply L’Oréal Professionnel Lift Extrême to the base of hair then comb L’Oréal Professionnel Expansion through mid-lengths and ends of the hair.
STEP 2: Section hair into a horseshoe shape, separating the top from the sides, back and underneath then clip sections.

STEP 4: Mold the hair into twist that has a faux-hawk feel and pin.
STEP 5: Insert bobby pins along the front of the twist in an asymmetrical pattern.
LOOK #2: Pinned Faux Hawk
STEP 1: Apply a volume mousse and brush through the hair then blow-dry hair using high heat.
STEP 2: Use a tail comb to carve a deep, precise arc part into the hair, from the crown to the nape of the neck. This created a clean section to work with
STEP 3: Spray a flexible hairspray for control then smooth the left side back and down following the parting.
STEP 4: Insert pins in a circular shape around the ear.
STEP 5: Spray L’Oréal Professionnel Infinium 3 sparingly, using a tail comb to shape the hair at the side part.
STEP 6: Finish with a mist of L’Oréal Professionnel Shimmer and L’Oréal Professionnel Lumi Control for definition.
LOOK #3: Pin Element
"I wanted to push the use of bobby pins as a hair accessory a bit further," says Beardsley. "The use of bobby pins gave the look an elegant edginess, transforming traditional silhouettes into something that looked like fabric."
STEP 1: Apply a generous amount of root spray and power dry hair using fingers to direct the hair up and over then use a medium round brush with mixed bristles.
STEP 2: Use a tail comb to section out the bottom portion of hair then press hair together with fingers and place bobby pins in sets of two about 1 inch apart.
STEP 3: Spray L’Oréal Professionnel Perfect Shimmer onto a Mason Pearson brush to smooth flyaways.
