Any Guest, Any Time: Watch This "Hair Ninja" Work His Magic

Clipper cut. Big Chop. Detailed fringe and texture. Flat iron maestro. Bread and butter root touchup. Ulta Beauty Design Team member Jerwin Carlos (@jwinclos) is a self-described #hairninja and a Redken certified colorist. Because of the next-level education and mentoring he gets (and gives!) from his Las Vegas-based Salon at Ulta Beauty along with  his hands-on experience supporting the Ulta Beauty Pro Team and Ulta Academy education in his district, he is prepped and ready to wow any guest fortunate to land in his chair.

Check the variety—and skills—across these four magnificent makeovers:

Look 1: The Big Chop

Carlos used Volare X2 Ferrari clippers from BabylissPro to manage a dramatic undercut through thick, curly hair, then the Volare V1 Dryer + Italy Dryer Diffuser to keep those curls in place.

To condition and prep the hair for styling, he turned to his Ulta Beauty Playground of 500+ brands and chose Design Essentials Almond & Avocado Moisturizing & Detangling Leave-in Conditioner and Natural Almond & Avocado Curl Enhancing Mousse.

To complete the clean-up, Carlos counted on the Oster Professional Classic 76 + 000 attachment ("to fight through all that hair").

Look 2: Devil in the Details

"This was such a fun but tedious haircut," Carlos said. "But she showed me what she wanted and this is what we got." Both guest and stylist were pleased with the stransformation.

After the #hairninja cut, Carlos styled the piece-y new look with a CHI flat iron to create “I woke up like that” texture, starting at the root and, depending on the direction of the curl, quickly running through the ends, leaving more definition roots to mids.

Pro tip: "I find it easier to use the flat iron vertically on shorter hair, and pull the hair strands down as I reach the ends.

Look 3: Accent Highlights + Root Touchup

"Sometimes you just need a little something to make the hair pop," Carlos explains. Pro tip: Focus foil placements at the hairline, and a few more at the crown.

Look 4: The Loyalty Builder

"Do you know about that magic touch," asks Carlos. "The one where clients just want to a put you in their pocket and take you home to do their hair every day?" Perfect the formula, listen to their needs, and they'll come back time after time. For this repeat color client, Carlos uses Redken Color Fusion 9VV:9AV with 20 volume pro-oxide developer on the new growth. On the ends, he applies Chromatics Ultra Rich 10AV 20vol oil in cream developer. Voila! Happy color, happy life. The #hairninja strikes again.
