Like most clients, I have a problem with my hair that I hope some dream stylist or product will be able to solve.

Don't get me wrong; I love my hair (my natural color, how fast it grows, etc). But while my sister has grown up with thick, curly hair, I've always had fine hair that seems to lose any volume hairdressers and products have been able to achieve. Luckily, I work at MODERN, so I was able to meet Color Wow Artistic Director and celebrity stylist Joseph Maine for a blowout event at Midtown Athletic Club's salon in Chicago. At first, I thought I was asking him to do the impossible: give me big, Texas hair. But Joseph was up for the challenge.

We started with a shampoo. Joseph used Color Wow's Color Security Shampoo, which he said completely removes any filmy residues left from other hair products within three washes. It's made without sulfates, silicones, thickening ingredients, conditioning agents or pearlizing ingredients: all things Joseph said had been weighing down my hair. He then used the Color Security Conditioner for Fine to Normal Hair, which is formulated with six translucent conditioning agents that don't oxidize, corrupt color or turn hair brassy.

Once back at the styling station, Joseph brushed out my hair before applying one of Color Wow's hair coacktails. Although any of the three can be used together, Joseph chose the Carb Cocktail for my hair. "When we eat carbs, they can bulk up our bodies," Joseph said. "The same is true if you apply carbs to hair." The Carb Cocktail bonds a 3-D carb-based "fiber-mesh" to the hair's surface, which in turn flattens up limp stands. Joseph used just a quarter-sized amount of the product throughout my hair and started 2 inches below the roots.

Before blow drying, Joseph sprayed some Raise the Root Thicken + Lift Spray on my roots. He then used a round brush to blow out my hair, section by section. Once dry, Joseph used the Style on Steroids texturizing spray and an iron to form tight curls all over the head. Using a large brush, Joseph then brushed out the curls to create large waves. He then applied a small amount of the Pop & Lock High Gloss Shellac to give my hair a non-greasy but high-gloss shine.

I was in love with the final look. I had that big, volumized hair I had always wanted, and my hair felt soft to the touch and healthy. Thanks, Joseph and Color Wow, for making my hair dreams come true.
