Glazed chocolate donut goodness by Julie Smith @thathairmagic

2 min to read

Julie Smith @thathairmagic, a stylist based in Cleveland, TN, specializes in sunkissed dimension, balayage, lived-in blondes and foilyage. Her brunettes are breathtaking and we love the subtlety of tones in this chocolatey goodness.  "It's like five minutes into fall and my whole gram is mostly brunette," she shared in her caption to this post. "I'm seriously loving the dark side, y'all!" Us, too. Us, too.

Redken Shades EQ used in all formulas

“This was a standard melting technique where I based, lowlighted, and glazed to tone down for the fall/winter over our previous spring/summer lightening processes.”

  • My base and lowlight formula was equal parts 03nb, 04n, 03g.

  • My colormelt formula was 03n, 03nw (base to midshaft) melted into ends formula 06gi, 05nw, and splash of 07vb.

BROWNIE POINTS:

  • My favorite thing for brunettes are to keep the depth and dimension intact! Anytime I’m doing a brunette balayage I always leave plenty of dark behind or purposefully add in rich dark lowlights to add in extra warmth or richness.

  • For grey coverage under 50% I colormelt with Kenra’s Cream Demi permanent (1:1) on roots for slight coverage and anything over 50% grey coverage I use permanent.

  • Redken Lacquers new NN Series is AMAZING for brunettes because it creates rich natural looking color without the lingering red-ish brass that often surfaces after a few washes from permanent color.
