Chris Appleton is the go-to guy to many top celebs, including Jennifer Lopez. Here he shares four of his top tips for updo perfection.

Chris Appleton uses Color Wow Root Cover Up not just to hide roots, but to diminish partings (especially on darker hair where the scalp may look particularly glaring in updos.) Here he uses a dark blonde on one of his favorite clients, Jennifer Lopez, adding, "I use it to blend extensions, make hairlines fuller and even create highlights."
Chris Appleton is a master master hairdresser. The “go-to” guy for all the top celebs (Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian, Katy Perry, Ariana Grande), Appleton loves to share his knowledge and techniques with other salon professionals. He has been recognized by all the top magazines and media outlets, and has won several awards, most recently the Celebrity Hairstylist Award from Intercoiffure America Canada.

Appleton is making himself uber accessible by holding a full day master workshop in NYC on November 23, 2019. It is the perfect opportunity for all salon professionals to learn how to create beautiful hair for both special occasions as well as for your everyday client. Called “Chris Appleton Fab AF Master Class,” attendees will focus on building skills and learn some of the insider tricks and techniques to create iconic hairstyles.
Appleton offered MODERN a sneak peek, sharing top four tips to special occasion perfection:
1. PREP: To create hair that will last all day and all night for red carpets, I always prep the hair using Color Wow Dream Coat. It keeps the hair frizz free and gives hair the hair a next level element. I saturate evenly to freshly shampooed hair and blow dry it into the strands. Prepping the hair in this manner allows for longer lasting shape. It also closes the cuticle and adds shine giving bouncy luxurious hair.
2. EXTENSIONS: Adding extensions to any special occasion style makes your client look and feel more glamorous. It instantly adds volume and fullness to give that luxurious look and feel. Clip-ins are an amazing way to add length and fullness without any commitment. (Appleton usesGlam Seamless Clip-Ins.)
3. POLISH: Red carpet clients are viewed from 360 degrees and you must make sure your client looks perfect and photo ready from every angle. I use Color Wow Root Cover Up on just about every celebrity to polish the hairline and to create a full and even silhouette to flatter the face shape.
4. VOLUME: I always use Color Wow to raise the root. Usually I dry the hair upside down for volume and then finish with a large round brush to smooth ends.
