Andis, who has been manufacturing styling equipment since 1922, has developed two simple rules to ensure clippers and trimmers deliver the power and performance we all depend on every time we pick them up: keep the cleaned and oiled, and store it properly between uses.
How to properly oil a clipper or trimmer
Oiling a clipper or trimmer is simple, if you know how to do it properly. The only difficult part is to sustain the discipline to oil them after every use.
* Hold the blade down and put a few drops of oil between the upper and lower blades while the motor is running. As it’s running, the excess oil and hair will drip off. Then, turn it off and dab the blade with a paper towel or dry cloth.
Hint: Never turn the blade up while you’re oiling the clipper or trimmer; oil will run into the motor and burn it out.
* You should also oil the clipper or trimmer when it’s new, before you ever use it. The oil from the factory sometimes dries out before it is purchased. Give it two nice, good squirts up and down the upper and lower blades.
Hint: It’s important to oil the clipper or trimmer after every use. There’s hair, hairspray and gel in the teeth of the blade, and if it’s not cleaned out every time it’s used, the teeth will glue to the upper and lower blades and they won’t move. It’s also more sanitary to clean them after each use.
Disinfect tools between uses
* Another sanitary practice is disinfecting tools between customers. Andis manufactures a blade spray called Cool Care Plus that cleans, disinfects and cools down the blades with a quick spray. It’s approved for use in all states.
Replacing blades
* Clipper blades should last a year or longer. If you use your clipper daily and keep it cleaned and oiled, you might need to change the blade after a year. If you don’t use it every day, a blade can last three or four years.
*Sharpening the blades is another option for clippers. You can sharpen blades several times, but once one of the teeth breaks, don’t sharpen it. Just buy a new blade.
Hint: Andis has its own service center at its factory in Racine, Wisconsin. There are also 42 authorized repair centers across the United States. All Andis professional products carry a one-year warranty and can be sent in for repair or replacement, depending on the product. Hair dryers and curling irons are usually replaced if there’s a problem within the first year. Clippers and trimmers are most often repaired within the warranty period.
