WILD FLOWER Erin Mills + Natalie Thomas
This team had a vision to create something light and airy. Erin Mills envisioned a light blonde that also reflected natural tones with subtle dimension. She used her Umbrella Foilyage Pattern, alternating lightener and gloss on the first 2-3 inches between the foils. After shampooing, Mills added a root shadow with the same gloss formula and then glazed. To style, Natalie Thomas blow dried with KMS ThermaShape Quick Blow Dry Spray using Nick Stenson’s Curious boar bristle flat brush. Mills and Thomas added GL Tapes for volume and length. Then, Thomas micro crimped random sections throughout the hair for texture and created a thick, five-strand crown braid. She curled the rest of the hair with a ¾-inch iron prepped with KMS HairPlay Playable Texture and then separated and defined curls with KMS TameFrizz Smoothing Lotion for smoothness and volume.

Top talent unites for inspiration, education and an editorial photoshoot at Artist Session: Influencer Series, held in New York City at Eva Scrivo Salon.
Twice each year, MODERN SALON hosts our ARTIST SESSION photoshoot workshop in New York City. Along with a team of on-set experts, MODERN’s Beauty and Fashion Director Maggie Mulhern educates salon professionals on the ins and outs of how to conduct an editorial photoshoot, maximize those photographs and get published.
To celebrate the talent within MODERN’s Artist Connective family of stylists, we invited 16 artists to join us for a twist on the traditional workshop with two days of inspiration, education and creative collaboration showing off their signature techniques at our Artist Session: Influencer Series.
Hosted at the stunning Eva Scrivo Salon in the flatiron district of New York City, the salon was full of support and collaborative love. Eight influential colorists were paired with eight influential stylists to create a cover-worthy look.
On day one, guest speakers demonstrated how they expand their influence and strengthen their communities using their respective platforms. Among others, Mark Bustos (@markbustos) shared his philosophy of “be awesome to somebody,” and salon owner and brand ambassador Jon Reyman (@jonreymanhair) shared how to get on a Fashion Week team and connect with pro beauty brands.
On day two, MODERN’s photoshoot team of experts, including award-winning photographer Roberto Ligresti and NAHA Makeup Artist of the Year David Maderich, united to bring each team’s vision to life and to show how their work can transcend Instagram.

ETHEREAL WHIMSY Stephanie Hodges + Haley Garber
The model’s hair had not been colored in almost a year, so Stephanie Hodges began with a full balayage, lifting to a level 8/9 blonde. She created shades of pinks, peaches and lavenders and applied them using a sand art color melt technique. As Hodges applied the color, stylist Haley Garber created braided rosettes using GL Tapes. She sprayed each flower with KMS StyleColor in Nude Peach and Velvet Berry to make them look like hair accessories. Garber curled the front, lightly setting each section with KMS Hairstay Anti-Humidity Seal, and she set the back using 4-inch roller pins to force the hair forward. She expanded curls with the help of KMS HairPlay Playable Texture. Garber created two braids—a smaller one and an oversized one underneath—weaving the smaller one through the larger. The GL Tape flowers were added for detail.

PASTEL GRAFFITI Derek Cash + Meg Stringham
Derek Cash first lightened the hair with 20 volume. He and teammate Meg Stringham applied 22-inch GL Tapes. Stringham used KMS Therma-Shape Shaping Blow Dry at the roots to add volume and hold, and used Nick Stenson’s Curious round brush to smooth hair. She created rope curls with a 1-inch iron and set with KMS ThermaShape 2-in-1 Spray. Stringham brushed out curls, and added lived-in texture with a flat iron finger wave. She took 1/8-inch pieces and rope wrapped around a ¼-inch curling iron, added two fishtail braids around the hairline and finished with KMS HairPlay Playable Texture for hold.

NEBULA GODDESS Gerilyn Ghaisarzadeh + Trae Howard
Inspired by the northern lights, this team utilized color melts, organic shapes and a shiny finish for their look. Gerilyn Ghaisarzadeh painted GL Tapes with a technicolor watercolor technique. She applied the extensions all over for length, thickness and added color. Once the rainbow foundation had been set, Trae Howard used KMS TameFrizz Smoothing Lotion for separation in a basket weave braid and to define the voluminous waves throughout.

QUEEN BEE Shannon Romano + Casey Powell
Shannon Romano and Casey Powell both create art out of hair—Romano is best known for coloring and painting intricate designs on straight hair, Powell is known for her hair sculptures built with bobby pins. They wanted to bring both elements to life for their collaboration. Romano painted GL Tapes extensions a bright yellow using direct dye, washed and dried them, then added a layer of red honeycombs. Once the extensions were applied, Powell prepped the hair with KMS ThermaShape Quick Blow Dry Spray, round brushed with Nick Stenson’s medium Curious Brush, and then curled the hair in a Hollywood wave set, before brushing out with the Curious cushion brush. She used KMS ThermaShape 2-in-1 Spray to smooth hair over one eye then pinned in place. For the sculpture component, Powell gathered hair to the side and created a three-strand braid using KMS HairPlay Playable Texture. Powell placed 2-inch bobby pins in the loops of the braid and then pulled the braid apart between the pins. For the finishing touch, Romano hand-painted bees using liquid body paint.

EDGY DRAMA Jess Dworniczak + Sara Ortega
Bring on the drama! Jess Dworniczak lightened sections with foils then color melted tones to add dimension. For added pops of color, she sprayed KMS StyleColor in Nude Peach and Velvet Berry on GL Tapes before applying. For the edgy style, Sara Ortega curled the hair primarily with a 2-inch curling iron but used a 1-inch curling iron for the front sections, pinning to create finger waves. Taking sections from both sides of the head, Ortega created two small braids to wrap as a headband across the forehead. She divided the rest of the hair into two ponytails—one braided and one twisted. The ponytails were then wrapped around the neck to form a hair necklace.

FAIRY BRIDE Kayluh Stewart + Jessica Domoney
Kayluh Stewart balayaged with clay lightener, blending with her hands to melt the previously lightened hair with the root color. Using custom-mixed colors, including icy blonde, smokey silver and pastel pink, Stewart colored the hair and GL Tapes. After drying with Nick Stenson’s Curious round brush, Jessica Domoney created a fishtail braid down to the shoulder and a French braid on the opposite side also to the shoulder, omitting the crown. The braids were joined into a faux braid to the ends. Domoney created a bubble texture out of GL Tapes. She sandwiched the extensions on precut mesh canvas and used a crochet needle to loop the hair through. KMS ThermaShape Shaping Blow Dry was used for hold. Once all the length were looped, she pulled away the mesh. For the feather-looking adornments, Domoney created “hair paper” by sprinkling various lengths of GL Tapes onto paper, using KMS HairStay Anti-Humidity Seal to saturate, placing a paper on top and pressing with an iron. Hair bubbles and feathers were pinned and finished with KMS ThermaShape 2-in-1 Spray.

SOFT GLAM Kim Bruce + Renee Plante
Kim Bruce wanted dimensional color to complement the style Renee Plante was going to create. To do so, Bruce did back-to-back baby weave foils around the hairline. She rinsed, toned, then shadowed about an inch down. The team applied GL Tapes for length, using 22-inch in color 23 for the first two rows and 18-inch in color 29 sandwiched on top of the 22-inch and color 23 for the third and fourth row. Plante prepped hair with KMS ThermaShape Shaping Blow Dry before blow drying, then curled hair and set it. She used KMS TameFrizz Smoothing Lotion to form and control curls, and KMS HairPlay Playable Texture for hold.

Manhattan’s Ulta Beauty salon served as the location for expert advice from Nick Stenson, VP of salon services and trend, and Chief Artistic Director Ammon Carver, who detailed how to troubleshoot on set, the importance of being agile and the special elements that allowed their team to win NAHA 2019 Team of the Year.
Ulta Beauty Pro Team member Pekela Riley discussed the need for artists to embrace all textures and shared how to get curl confidence.
Great Lengths extension educators Danielle Keasling and Nanci Lee taught guests how to embrace extensions both on set and in the salon and how extensions can take looks to the next level.
Colorist Kylie Bussing (@kyliebussinghair) talked about the game-changing experience of entering hair competitions like Color Zoom, while educator Lexi Lomax (@lomax.lexi) shared styling tips using the KMS family of styling products.
